Handheld laser methane detector

Find methane leaks from 50 metres away.

Aim the MS600-L at a pipe, a valve or a ceiling void and it reads the methane in the laser's path. No ladders, no confined-space entry, no walking into the gas cloud to find out where it is.

Features

Built for field inspection crews

One operator can sweep a station, a pipe rack or a building riser in a fraction of the time a contact sniffer needs.

Remote detection

Measures methane along the laser path up to 50 m away, so overhead lines and fenced-off equipment can be checked from where you stand.

Visible aiming laser

The measuring laser is invisible infrared. A Class IIIA pointer shows exactly where it lands, so you know which joint or valve gave the reading.

Methane only

A narrow-linewidth DFB laser is tuned to methane's absorption line. Water vapour, CO₂ and other gases do not trigger it, and a filter on the lens blocks sunlight.

200 readings per second

0.03 s response at 50 m. Readings keep up as you sweep the beam along a long pipe run.

Self-calibrating

A built-in reference gas cell checks the laser wavelength in real time. No routine field calibration is needed.

Adjustable alarm

Set the alarm anywhere from 1,000 to 20,000 ppm in 1,000 ppm steps. The buzzer sounds the moment a reading crosses it.

Bluetooth app

Pair with an Android phone to map your route, flag alarm points and produce a PDF inspection report.

Readings your way

Switch between ppm·m, %VOL·m and %LEL·m. Past test results are stored on the device for review.

Rugged and intrinsically safe

IP66 sealed, Ex ib IIC T4 Gb rated, hard-anodised aluminium body. Weighs 350 g and runs about 12 hours per charge.

Units straight out of the case: one long press to switch on, a short press to start measuring.

  • HOLD 3 SPower on or off. The screen shows the firmware version on start-up.
  • PRESS ONCEStart or stop detection. The pointer lights up and the mode changes from STOP to RUN after a 5-second warm-up.
  • HOLD 2 SFrom idle, enter alarm setting. Each press adds 1,000 ppm.
  • ON SCREENLive concentration, 5-second maximum, signal strength, battery level, internal temperature and pressure.
How it works

Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy

The transmitter and receiver sit together in one probe. The beam goes out, bounces back, and the gas in between leaves its fingerprint.

  1. The laser is tuned to methane

An infrared DFB laser emits a single, very narrow wavelength that methane molecules absorb.

  2. Light travels out and back

The beam hits a wall, a pipe or the ground and part of it scatters back to the receiver. No special reflector is needed.

  3. Absorption becomes a number

Methane in the path absorbs light in proportion to how much is there. The detector corrects for temperature and pressure and shows the result in ppm·m.

Mobile app

From a walk-round to a written report

The detector pairs with an Android phone over Bluetooth. The app keeps the record so the crew can keep their eyes on the pipe.

  • Mark the start pointSet the location automatically or pick it on the map.
  • Record the routeThe trajectory is drawn on the map as you walk.
  • Flag alarm pointsReadings above the alarm value are pinned on the track with concentration, time and address. Add notes and photos.
  • Generate a PDFOne tap builds a report of the route and alarm records, saved on the phone. Data can also be uploaded to a server.

ppm·m is a path-integrated reading: methane concentration multiplied by the length of gas the beam passes through. Specifications may change without notice. Contact us for the latest datasheet and certification documents.

Applications

Where the MS600-L earns its keep

01

Gas and oil pipelines

Patrol buried and above-ground lines and check joints and valve clusters without opening them.

02

City gas networks

Inspect regulators, meters and building risers from street level.

03

Stations and terminals

Survey LNG, CNG and gate stations, including equipment behind fences.

04

Plants and facilities

Check pipe racks, ceilings and tank tops in industrial and petrochemical sites.

Field tips

Getting reliable readings

Where should I aim first?

Methane is lighter than air, so scan the upper part of a suspected leak area first. Joints and valve clusters are the usual suspects.

Does sunlight affect it?

The lens filter handles normal daylight, but avoid pointing the lens straight at the sun. Use a hood in strong sun. Night-time gives the cleanest readings.

Can I use it in the rain?

Yes, in light to moderate rain. Heavy rain or snow blocks the beam, so readings taken then should not be relied on.

What can the beam bounce off?

Walls, pipes, the ground and most solid surfaces. Water surfaces do not work as a reflector. Keep the target more than 1 m away.

Can it see through glass?

Yes, if the beam meets the glass at an angle of more than 30° from straight-on. Aimed perpendicular to the glass, detection fails.

How do I check it is working?

Seal methane of a known concentration in a clear plastic bag, place it in the beam path, set the alarm to 2,000 ppm and confirm the reading and buzzer.
